Communication and media studies is continuously faced with new challenges such as the various social effects of media globalization, the ever growing role of popular media culture in publicity and the formation of societies, as well as in the life of individuals in general, the importance of mediation in, for example, politics, the quick spreading of internet availability, the development of mobile communication technologies, or media convergence. We are talking about a field of study that is interdisciplinary by definition, which means that it is based on a wide array of social and natural sciences related to the study of media and communication.

Our MA Program in Communication and Media Studies – which is based on our faculty’s professional and educational experience of almost a decade now – is primarily aimed to maintain the natural diversity that characterizes the field, since we think that this is the only way to develop our students’ competences. We would like to teach them a certain way of thinking that helps them to quickly identify and solve problems in their work.

Secondly, and in relation to our primary aim, we also want to make our students familiar with the origin and development of basic phenomena and relations in the ever changing world of communication and media within its various contexts, so that they can effectively use their knowledge in their individual work and decision-making.

Information on the program

The three basic modules of the master’s program are aimed to provide the foundations on which students can later build. They become familiar with the development and functioning of mediated society, as well as the examination of communication and media (media culture). What also gains primary importance in the program is the orientation on human communication, as well as the public communication track, which is built on this orientation (namely, the study and analysis of all kinds of communication phenomena related to the public activities of various organizations, institutions, decision-making bodies, businesses, and civil groups and movements). A unique characteristic of our MA Program in Communication and Media Studies is to approach communication phenomena from the angle of human interactions and relations. And vice versa: we find the analysis of interpersonal situations vital in the study of, for example, persuasion or new media.

In the course of the program

  • students are introduced to the latest international and Hungarian results of the field, since only this way can we keep up with the competition both in Hungary and the European labour market;
  • we offer our students tutorials and individual research opportunities, which also help them prepare for lifelong learning;
  • students can take part in the work carried out in the Research Centre for Media and Cultural Studies at King Sigismund Business School, which can be useful in their doctoral (PhD) studies.

The primary aim of the study program is to understand

  • the theory of communication and processes of mediation;
  • the effect mechanisms of communication and media, the psychology of media effect;
  • the aspects of persuasion, verbal and non-verbal impression;
  • the communication and media aspects of the development of emotions and experiences;
  • the relations between narrativity and identity;
  • the interpersonal aspects of media operation;
  • the development of media societies, the characteristics of information society;
  • the change of media systems, their social and political background;
  • the most important questions of designing and creating media products and media texts;
  • the development of visual techniques, the status of visuals, and the change of visual habits;
  • the rhetoric and structure of the image, design, and commercial message;
  • the various trends in communication and media research;
  • the aspects of public communication;
  • the social, cultural and political effects of media globalization;
  • the relations of globalization and the new media.

What else do we offer?

All the theoretical and practical knowledge our students gain in the field of communication and media studies, as well as the competences and problem-solving methods acquired and strengthened in the course of their studies enable our graduates to work in a variety of fields and do different kinds of activities. It is exactly because we live in a media society, and the role of communication and mediation is becoming more and more important in all aspects of life.

Moreover, as a result of the change in the higher education system, the importance and value of master’s degrees are growing in the labour market. Candidates with MA degrees are preferred in the leading positions of various organizations, businesses, multinational companies, local governments and media institutions, so an MA diploma has become a serious competitive advantage.

Our master’s program thus gives advantages especially to those who (wish to) work in the media and communication industry, and those who deal with organizational communication and the development and maintaining of social and public relations of companies, organizations, movements and institutions (e.g. spokespeople and communication managers, political communication advisors and analysts, journalists, people working in community media, or specialists in strategic marketing). After graduating from the MA program, students will have the possibility to develop an academic career by pursuing doctoral studies in a PhD program.
